In this write-up, we are contrasting the Olympus 1 and Olympus SP-100, both Small Sensor Superzoom digital cameras and both of them are sold by Olympus. There exists a large gap between the sensor resolutions of the 1 (12MP) and SP-100 (16MP) and the 1 (1/1.7") and SP-100 (1/2.3") use different sensor sizes.

More often than not, its hard to picture the gap between sensor dimensions only by reading a spec sheet. The picture underneath may give you a greater sense of the sensor sizing in the 1 and SP-100.
As you can see, both cameras offer different megapixel count and different sensor dimensions. The 1 because of its larger sensor is going to make achieving shallower DOF less difficult and the Olympus SP-100 will deliver greater detail utilizing its extra 4MP. Greater resolution will also make it easier to crop photos a little more aggressively.
