Threads, the new app by Meta, has released its first major update since its recent launch. This comes after reports that the app lost half of its active users.
The update includes a translation button and a new “follows tab” on the activity feed. The follows tab allows users to easily see who is following them, while the translation button helps users read text in other languages.
Other updates include the ability to subscribe and receive notifications from accounts users don’t follow, a “follow” button on post replies, bug fixes, and general improvements.

Despite the update, there are still key features missing from Threads. Users can’t yet enjoy a chronologically ordered feed, use direct messages, or use hashtags.
There is also no robust search function or full web version available. These missing features are crucial for the popularity of similar apps like Twitter. Meta hopes that this new update will help regain momentum after reports that Threads lost half of its active users since launch.

According to SimilarWeb, the number of daily active Threads users decreased from 49 million to 23.6 million in just one week. This means that many signed up initially but aren’t returning regularly.
Additionally, user engagement has dropped, with the average time spent on the app decreasing from 20 minutes to 10 minutes.
However, the CEO of Instagram, which owns Threads, stated that engagement metrics are not a major focus for the app at this stage.
