This weekend is all about the movies, with two big releases creating major buzz. And now, thanks to some AI magic, these two films have been combined in an outrageous mashup called “Barbenheimer.”
The video, which went viral on Reddit with over 10,000 upvotes, took four days to create using an AI image generator called Midjourney.
But that’s not all – the video’s creator, Curious Refuge, also utilized other tools like Runway Gen 2, After Effects, and several techniques to bring “Barbenheimer” to life.
Not only does the video feature scenes from both movies seamlessly blended together, but it also includes AI-generated voices that mimic the voices of Matt Damon and Margot Robbie, the stars of Oppenheimer and Barbie, respectively.
Reddit users were blown away by the skillful use of these diverse AI tools and praised the video’s quality. Some even wondered when AI technology will advance to a point where it becomes hard to distinguish between real and AI-generated footage.
The fact that two diverse movies are released on the same weekend with equal levels of hype is incredibly rare. But “Barbenheimer” manages to capture people’s imagination by merging these two distinct films, creating a symbiotic promotion for both.
Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic age. Featuring stunning visuals captured with IMAX 70mm cameras and showcased at selected IMAX theaters, this film is designed to awe viewers.
Barbie, on the other hand, helmed by Greta Gerwig, diverges from being mere branded content. The movie’s original teaser trailer parodies Stanley Kubrick’s iconic 2001: A Space Odyssey, hinting at something unexpected and thought-provoking.
Usually, when “twin movies” release simultaneously, they share many similarities. Like Antz and A Bug’s Life or Deep Impact and Armageddon. But “Barbenheimer” breaks this pattern by captivating audiences with its unique blend of two unrelated films, fostering intrigue and conversation.
Warner Bros. Pictures, the studio releasing Barbie, likely did not anticipate this unintended synergy between the two films.
They may have scheduled Barbie’s release on the same day as Oppenheimer to outshine Christopher Nolan, who unexpectedly signed with Universal Studios after years of collaboration with Warner Bros.
