The update to the popular Samsung T5 portable SSD is here and it is faster and more secure with a built-in fingerprint reader. At CES, Samsung showcased the new T7 SSD with some neat upgrades.
The speed of the drive is now double that of its predecessor but the most important upgrade comes in the way of security. All of us dread the day we might leave our harddrive behind in a coffee shop or simply misplace it – possibly exposing our private data.
Samsung plans to solve this issue by having biometric security built right into the drive itself. It uses AES 256-bit encryption so no one can access your files unless they have permission.
You can register up to 4 fingerprints and the drive is shockproof up to two meters in case you drop it.
The drive comes with USB 3.2 (no thunderbolt) and will be available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB models for $129, $229 and $399 respectively. Housed in a clean metal chassis, we expect this one to sell really well.
It will be on sale later this month and a non-touch model is also expected for those who want the speed improvements but don’t necessarily care for the added security features.
